Alphabay Counterfeiters Identified as Empire Market Administrators

UPDATE: DarknetDiscussions has learned that Pavey was charged on the 15th of February, 2023. Hamilton appears to have been charged March 6th, of last year.

Federal authorities have busted a major dark web marketplace, charging two men with running a criminal operation that handled counterfeit money, drugs, and stolen financial information valued at over $430 million.

Thomas Pavey, 38, from Ormond Beach, Florida, known as "Dopenugget" online, and Raheim Hamilton, 28, from Suffolk, Virginia, who used the aliases "Sydney" and "Zero Angel," face serious charges. Prosecutors allege that from 2018 to 2020, the duo operated Empire Market, which facilitated the sale of numerous illegal goods and services.

The indictment against Pavey and Hamilton includes accusations of drug trafficking, computer fraud, access device fraud, counterfeiting, and money laundering. Among their clientele was a resident of Northern Illinois, who allegedly bought counterfeit money from the site.

Pavey and Hamilton purportedly assured buyers that the counterfeit currency would evade standard detection methods, appearing as legitimate U.S. money.

Before creating Empire Market on February 1, 2018, Pavey and Hamilton were involved in selling counterfeit money on AlphaBay, another notorious dark web site shut down in 2017. Empire Market swiftly grew into a platform hosting thousands of vendors selling everything from drugs and stolen credit card information to counterfeit currency and malicious software.

Customers on Empire Market could browse various categories, such as "Fraud," "Drugs & Chemicals," "Counterfeit Items," and "Software & Malware." Each main category had sub-categories, including "Cocaine," "Heroin," "Meth," "Opium," and others under "Drugs & Chemicals."

Transactions on Empire Market were conducted using cryptocurrency to maintain the anonymity of the site's operators, vendors, and buyers. Despite these measures, federal investigators managed to seize $75 million in cryptocurrency, along with cash and precious metals.
